Kia keeps the choice simple with the Niro Plug-in Hybrid by offering just two trims: the EX and SX Touring. Both use a gas-powered 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor to produce a combined 180 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft of torque. The front-wheel-drive Niro PHEV is managed through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
In electric-only mode, the Niro PHEV is EPA-rated to deliver 103 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) and a range of up to 33 miles. The 11.1-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery takes about three hours to recharge via a 240-volt Level 2 system. Cargo capacity is higher after the redesign, with 19.4 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 54.6 cubic feet with the back seat folded down.
The major standard equipment for the EX includes dual-zone temperature control, a ten-way power driver’s seat with lumbar controls, heated front seats, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and upholstery in a combination of vegan leather and fabric. The EX also gets a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, a vegan leather-wrapped steering wheel, second-row air vents, heated power side mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and 16-inch wheels.
The SX Touring brings numerous upgrades, like a power sunroof, LED exterior lighting with fog lamps, a power liftgate, a driver’s memory system, perforated vegan leather upholstery (the front seats are heated and ventilated), a heated steering wheel, heated power side mirrors with a power-folding feature, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 18-inch wheels. Both trims are eligible for the Cold Weather Package, which will add an upgraded cabin heater and heated rear outboard seats for both trims and a heated steering wheel for the EX.
Kia Drive Wise is a suite of sophisticated safety technology and driver aids that comes standard on the Niro Plug-in Hybrid. These features reflect forward collision-avoidance assist (with pedestrian and cyclist detection and junction assist), rear blind-spot collision warning with parallel exit assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, and lane following assist. The other related standard systems include adaptive cruise control, speed limit assist, driver attention warning, safe exit warning, rear occupant alert, and automatic high beams.
Infotainment for the Niro PHEV incorporates a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and access to Kia Connect remote services. The EX gets a six-speaker audio system, while the SX Touring upgrades to a seven-speaker Harman Kardon arrangement. Both trims also have multiple USB ports and wireless device charging.
