Kia presents the Niro PHEV in two trims: EX and SX Touring. Under the hood is a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder gas engine paired with an electric motor and 11.1-kWh hybrid battery to create 180 combined horsepower. Topping off this powertrain is a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drivetrain. This system is a step up from the Niro Hybrid with its 139-horsepower configuration, partly due to the more powerful electric motor. With a lower center of gravity, the Niro PHEV provides exceptional handling for a more enjoyable drive experience.
As mentioned, the Niro PHEV can travel up to 33 miles on electric power. It also features an EPA-estimated combined MPGe rating of 108. When it’s plugged into a 240-volt charger, the battery takes less than three hours to become fully charged.
The Niro PHEV EX Touring’s seats are upholstered in a blend of SynTex and cloth, with heated front seats and a 10-way power driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar support. Its exterior style is accented with a matte-black rear spoiler and 16-inch alloy wheels. This well-outfitted base trim also has wireless device charging, a 4.3-inch instrument display, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear-seat A/C vents, rain-sensing windshield wipers, push-button start, a smart key system, five USB ports, a 12-volt power outlet, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats for carrying bulkier cargo items. With the EX Touring Cold Weather Package elected, this trim will get heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel.
The SX Touring gets some significant upgrading with a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, perforated SynTex seats, a smart power tailgate, a power sunroof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated power-folding side view mirrors with integrated LED turn-signal indicators, LED headlights, LED fog lights, a gloss-black rear spoiler, and 18-inch gloss-black alloy wheels. The optional SX Touring Cold Weather Package adds heated rear seats.
Both 2024 Niro PHEV trims have the proprietary lineup of Drive Wise technologies installed. This safety-enhancing package contains forward collision warning, blind-spot warning, parallel exit, pedestrian warning, cyclist warning, junction turning detection, park distance warning (front and rear), rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, lane following assist, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, navigation-based smart cruise control with stop-and-go, intelligent speed limit assist, highway driving assist, driver attention warning, leading vehicle departure alert, safe exit warning, and rear occupant alert.
The infotainment situation in the ’24 Niro PHEV centers around a 10.25-inch touchscreen. This system, which can also be controlled using voice recognition, unites navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth. While the EX Touring gets a 6-speaker sound system, the SX Touring goes a step further with a premium Harman Kardon sound system with seven speakers.
